Epiretinal Membrane (Macular Pucker)

What It Is

An epiretinal membrane is a thin sheet of scar tissue that forms on the surface of the macula, leading to visual distortion. It often occurs with age or after eye surgery.

Symptoms

  • Wavy or distorted central vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Mild enlargement of images (macropsia)

Findings

  • Wrinkled, transparent membrane on the retina
  • Macular thickening or distortion on OCT
  • Possible association with vitreous detachment

Treatments

If the condition is mild and not affecting vision, observation may be sufficient. For more significant cases, a vitrectomy with membrane peeling may be necessary. Post-operative care often includes the use of eye drops and specific positioning as needed.

Outcomes

Vision often improves following surgery, although some degree of distortion may persist. Full recovery can take several months, depending on the individual case.
