Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR)

What It Is

CSR is a condition where fluid builds up under the retina, leading to central vision distortion. It’s often stress-related and affects adults between 20–50 years old.

Symptoms

  • Blurry or distorted central vision
  • Gray or dark spot in vision
  • Reduced contrast sensitivity

Findings

  • Subretinal fluid on OCT
  • Leakage seen on fluorescein angiography
  • Localized detachment of the macula

Treatments

In acute cases, observation is typically the first approach. For chronic central serous retinopathy (CSR), photodynamic therapy (PDT) may be considered as a treatment option. It’s also important to address underlying factors such as stress or the use of steroids, if relevant.

Outcomes

This condition often resolves on its own within weeks to months; however, some patients may experience recurrent episodes. In chronic cases, it can potentially lead to permanent vision changes.
